How To Create a Custom Template (Hair System Mold)

A Guide to Creating a Template

Difficulty: Easy Time Needed: 45 Minutes

Materials Checklist

The items listed on this page are required to complete this task.

  • Sharpie Permanent Marker
  • Household Saran Wrap
  • Clear Scotch Tape
  • Spray Bottle
  • Scissors

STEP 1

Place the wrap over the
balding area

Cut a piece of saran wrap long enough to tie a knot under your chin. The plastic sheet should cover the entire circumference of your head.

To prevent plastic from moving around it helps to spray some water on your scalp before placing plastic on your head.

STEP 2

Securing the wrap to the
head

Now that the saran wrap is on the head grab the two ends and pull down under your chin while twisting the wrap. Make sure wrap on top of the head is flat with no creases and wrinkles. Once you have confirmed the placement of the wrap tie a knot under the chin to hold the wraps position.

STEP 3

Applying tape to secure the
shape

Tape the saran wrap to the face and back of the head. Also place tape around
the perimeter just above the forehead.

Now start placing tape across the plastic wrap side-by-
side overlapping the hairline and forehead by at least
one inch. Now make another layer in the opposite
direction from forehead to back of the head. Repeat
until it is sturdy enough to hold its shape

STEP 4

Trace hairline and mark F
for front

With a Sharpie marker, draw pattern lines on the tape template while it is on your head. Though requirements vary from customer to customer, some rules of thumb apply to most. A Front hairline should usually be established by placing three or four fingers above the brow line. Lines are drawn from that point to form a pattern which covers the bald area. Deeper recessions look most natural. After the entire outer perimeter of the pattern is drawn, the desired style should be indicated. If a part is desired, draw a line from a pivot point at the back crown to the front hairline. Placement of the pivot point should correspond to what can be seen of your original growth. Indicate the probable growth pattern on the tape template, the date the tape template is made, as well as other pertinent information concerning the custom hairpiece.

STEP 5

Marking the part and hair
direction

After you have finished marking the tape template, add one more layer of tape (now four) to cover and seal in the markings. After your mold is complete please take at least 2 small locks of hair from your scalp and indicate what part of the head they were taken from, this will help us to accurately match your hair's natural color. (If you can provide your color code this step is not necessary.)
